Press and Reviews

"UBO Magazine"
"Madeline Roa, long-time Sacramento Folk-rock performer needs nothing except her guitar and beautiful sing-song voice to gather her audience’s attention. Recently she can be seen performing with H-5 of Trunk of Funk; who performs with Crazy Ballhead and previously with Mr. P Chill and Kevin AKA Bones, playing the thumping-pumping sound of the Djembe."

"Sacramento News & Review"
“As you can see, my musical taste is all over the map,” explains local singer-songwriter Madeline Roa, whose influences read like a Lilith Fair lineup. It’s not hard to imagine Roa, armed with her emotionally charged lyrics and sweet voice, performing as part of the now-defunct festival.

"KWOD 106.5"
review from kwod.net/sounds_of_sac
Described as a "mind-blowing fusion of acoustic rock, folk, and urban pop, Madeline Roa's music and vocal style has been compared to that of Natalie Merchant, Alanis Morrisette, and the Indigo Girls but there is much more going on than those comparisons would lead you to believe. Check out Madeline's live show the next time she's playing.

"Reflections"
Reviewed by Jeff

"Her" current CD "Reflection" is just that, A "Reflection" on certain social issues of the day, along with self discovery, love lost, love gone bad, the trials and tribulations that go with growing up, liking the same person your best friend likes to self improvement.

Musically they are a combination of acoustic guitars, folk/pop, easy listening music. Vocally Madeline reminds me of a cross between "Natalie Merchant" (10,000 maniacs) meets "Edie Brickell" (and the new Bohemians). (to read more click here)

"In The Spotlight"

Madeline Roa was featured at Sonicbids.com as an "In The Spotlight" artist during the week of July 25 - 29 2005.

"Step Right Up"

When Roa steps to the microphone on the low stage at Old Ironsides downtown, all eyes - the dozen or so pairs of them - are fixed on her as she leans into a song about the Iraq war.
And when she finishes, the listeners applaud warmly. Some even whoop for her.
She smiles. Doing this makes her happy.

What People Are Saying
I saw your picture, Madeline, thought how beautiful you were, and I really wanted to like your music. I really wanted to...Then I did!

Comparisons are never an exact science, but I heard a little Natalie Merchant, a little Indigo Girls, maybe even a little Alanis Morissette (without as much angst). The band has a really nice sound and I can see you guys on stage in front of a tight crowd having them moving. I can see me cruising into a CD store and buying your full CD for a listen!

Overall, I really enjoyed your stuff... Keep up the good work!

-Jonny Bird (Has worked with former Prince guitarist and producer Levi Seacer Jr, and other members of the Prince camp, on his full-length CD.)

I roadied many "indie" rock bands throughout my early years (Pixies, Dead Milkmen, Cranberries to drop a few in there)

Even though I am no longer producing Rock acts I like to think I have an ear for it still so I decided to review your EPK and here are my thoughts:

Your Music:
Very melodic, the guitar structure reminds me of the old school underground alternative (Concrete Blonde almost). I think the songwriting is well done...

The female lead is well done...

In the music there is a good foundation for a producer to work on. Strong songwriting and that dark acoustic feeling are the strong points...

...Well the music is always the 2nd thing I look at as a scout, the first being a picture (to make sure you don't have two heads). I like what I see image wise. Girl lead, cultural diversity, small band...

I would go see the show definitely

The...
songs are nice pop sounding songs w/ some serious/heavy lyrics that remind me of Natalie Merchant vocals

I believe the expression is YOU ROCK! I absolutely love your voice. Being a guitar player, though, I must say that I really enjoyed the guitar as well. Good chord progression and variations, I was impressed by every thing. As a matter of fact we are putting an acoustic song on our full-length. Not quite sure when that will be though, we got Sony Records looking at us right now and we are playing a show on Jan.14 in front of 9 labels so we hope to get picked up before spending our money on a full length. Anyway you guys rock, I really enjoyed your stuff and hopefully we will be in the area soon and we will come watch you if you come watch us!
